New HRC Action Store Opens Tomorrow

Tomorrow at 11am, the Human Rights Commission’s new pop-up Action Store opens at 388½ North Palm Canyon Drive (between E. Alego and E. Amado in Uptown Palm Springs) with an official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Retired Marine Staff Sergeant Eric Alva, Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet, Desert AIDS Project CEO David Brinkman and actress Lorna Luft are scheduled to be in attendance.

HRC board member and local businessman Andy Linsky was the inspiration for this store which joins three other locations: Washington DC; San Francisco, CA (located in the historic home of civil rights legend Harvey Milk); and Provincetown, MA. In working within the community, the HRC Action Center has partnered with The Desert AIDS Project in creating a specially designed t-shirt. $10 from the sale of each tee will purchase a quick-result HIV test kit that assists DAP in continuing their tremendous work in offering free and confidential HIV testing. One hundred percent of every purchase from the store goes to the fight for LGBT equality.

From HRC President Joe Solmonese:

We strive to give prospective grassroots LGBT activists the tools they need to make a difference. By opening a new Action Center and Store in Palm Springs in the height of the city’s tourist season, we will reach thousands of people who want to lend their voices to the fight for equality.

Each store offers a “unique fusion of education and grassroots advocacy with HRC’s signature merchandise.” Featured in each location is an in-store action center serving as a source for information on national issues, the work of HRC, andways for you involve yourself in encouraging LGBT advocates to “push leaders at all levels in support of equality”.

Since its founding in 1980, the HRC’s 750,000 members and supporters nationwide have worked tirelessly through grassroots efforts to become the nation’s largest civil rights organization representing equality and fairness for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

The store will be open until Memorial Day Weekend. Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10 to 7; Friday and Saturday 10 to 9; and Sunday 10 - 6. They are closed on Tuesday. For more information call 760 325-5368 or visit their website. Please come out and show your support for HRC and DAP!
